Air NZ cost health board $1.8M Air New Zealand’s “rapacious approach” to air fares has cost the region’s health board an extra $1.8 million since competing airline Origin Pacific collapsed, the equivalent of 100 hip replacements, 1000 cataract operations or the annual salaries of 25 nurses. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s former chief executive John Peters – who retired from the DHB in 2012 after eight years as its head – says since Origin Pacific was competed out of the market in

2006 the DHB has faced additional costs on its air bills of $1.8 million. “Origin stopped carrying passengers in August 2006, and by the end of the DHB’s financial year in June 2007, ten months later, the costs for air travel had increased by over $200,000 compared to the same period the previous year of using Origin. That was nearly a 20 per cent increase, when the actual passenger numbers had grown by less than two per cent.” He says in the seven and a half years since

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz then, and at that annual rate of around $240,000 additional cost per year, the cost of air travel will have exceeded what would have been paid to Origin by something around $1.8 million. “There is no compensation from central government that money has to be found from the local

health budget. To put it in perspective, this represents around 100 hip replacements, or 1000 cataract operations, or 25 nurses – or any number of other vital health services for the Nelson and Marlborough region that could no longer be provided, but instead goes to Air New Zealand to shore it up on the routes it still has competition.” Air New Zealand was contacted to answer questions raised by John but did not get

What a flash proposal Kathy Barton will never have another lunch break like it. Hauled up in front of dozens of singing and dancing strangers in the Richmond Mall food court, Kathy was handed a bunch of flowers before the “flash mob” split leaving her partner Craig Kempton standing ten metres away in a tie, holding an engagement ring. “I was stunned,” she says, “Completely shocked. I was like a stunned mullet, it was surreal.” Craig spent six weeks organising the wedding proposal and included the expertise of Soundstage for the “flash mob” of singers and dancers, belting out the Bruno Mars song ‘Marry You.’ He also organised for one of Kathy’s friends to meet her during her lunch break from Farmers and for their family members to appear at the end of the proposal. “I got three hours sleep on Friday night,” says Craig. “I was so nervous

but 99.9 per cent sure it would end the way I wanted it to. I had no exit strategy.” The proposal started with Kathy enjoying lunch before two Soundstage members broke into song, by the second verse dozens of others, ranging from children to older adults had joined in and had the mall rocking. As the song came to a close, Craig’s youngest son Shaun approached Kathy with a bunch of flowers, took her hand and led her to the front of the flash mob. There she stood with her hand over her mouth as the mob split and Craig was left standing with the ring. The crowd broke out into applause as he walked towards her, got on one knee and proposed. Shaking, she said yes. Craig says he got the idea from a YouTube clip and was thrilled with how it turned out. “We were just buzzing, absolutely buzzing. It went off better than I could have dreamed.”

any information through before the paper went to print. John says the DHB raised the issue with Air New Zealand on a number of occasions but the standard response was that they do have a number of low cost fares on most flights. “Unfortunately, we could never get patients to co-operate with having their illness or accident at a time to suit Air New Zealand’s advance booking requirements, and so the late booking high prices remain unavoidable.” Although John says the DHB was top of the list of those affected, as “probably the largest single user of passenger services in the top of the South Island”, the approach to fare pricing has cost the region significantly in lost opportunities. The concerns from the former CEO of the DHB is one of many that have come forward since Waimea Weekly highlighted the

issue of Air New Zealand’s prices. Their high fares have also attracted criticism from its most regular flyers, families and Grey Power. A Nelson family said they looked at flights with Air New Zealand to fly from Nelson to Los Angeles in the school holidays later this year. The price was $12,000 return. To fly from Christchurch to Sydney and then Los Angeles with Virgin Australia on the same days was $7000, a $5000 difference. Nelson Grey Power executive member Addo Mulders says he sought a meeting with Prime Minister John Key in February to discuss the issue, as many elderly are simply choosing not to travel because they can’t afford to fly. “There are specials but you have to have a computer system at home and a lot of elderly don’t have that in their homes so they miss out.” He says he sought the meeting to try and force the government to stop Air New Zea-

land’s price “gouging”. “We want the government to rein them in and stop them demanding whatever they want to demand. That should be stopped and it’s not fair trading and it makes you laugh when we [taxpayers] own 50 per cent of the airline.” Regular air travellers say they’ve been left with no option but to pay Air New Zealand’s high fares after it cancelled its frequent flyer scheme called Starfish. Starfish allowed regular fliers to receive a 30 per cent discount on all domestic flights for an annual fee of $800, or a 15 per cent discount for those prepared to pay $200. It was a small relief from the high prices paid by those who don’t travel as often, but Air New Zealand has canned it, citing its takeup being less than expected. One of its users, Matt Thompson, flies to Wellington and back every week for business and says he was shocked and disappointed when he was informed the service

was to close. “We’re spending a lot of money with Air New Zealand and now there is virtually no benefit that comes with that.” Cyndy Dever was another user of Starfish and says she often flew to Taupo and Napier for work but now the prices are “out of our league” and she will have to drive, turning a two hour journey into an 11 hour trip. “We get stung with the outrageous fares of $550 one way to Taupo. You can fly to Australia return for that.” Editor’s note: For the second time in three weeks we’ve approached Air New Zealand for a balanced response and they have been “unable” to fully answer our questions, despite plenty of warning. It’s our belief that Air New Zealand’s communications department is trying to stifle this story, demonstrating the same lack of respect they’ve shown the Nelson public to date. The desired result on their part is to hope like hell we all fall asleep or give up.

Salisbury School’s roll is falling at an alarming rate, raising questions of the school’s future and the Ministry of Education’s enrolment policy for the country’s only residential special educational centre for girls. Last year, the Ministry of Education tried to close the school and replace it with community-based special education that involved sending some of the girls to a boys’ residential college in Halswell in Christchurch. But the school fought the decision and it stayed open when the High Court ruled that placing girls in a boys’ residential college was unlawful and did not take into account the girls’ safety. Now the school is facing another challenge with its roll falling to just 17 students, with up to four of those likely to leave soon as they come to the end of their two year course. Only seven new students have been enrolled in the last year. That represents a significant decline in student numbers, with Ministry of Education figures showing the roll fall-

A Nelson man was counting his lucky stars on Saturday after he was attacked by a shark while spear fishing off The Glen. The two-metre bronze whaler came “in the blink of an eye” to swim right at Adam Gudsel, who had just speared a kingfish a few minutes earlier and was still reeling it in. Adam says the incident happened “in a flash” but instinct took over and he was able to kick it on the nose and divert it. Straight away he yelled for help from a kayaker nearby. He jumped on his boat and was taken back to the beach as the shark took Adam’s kingfish. He says he has heard of a bronze whaler shark taking speared kingfish off The Glen but was shocked that it came for him and thinks it may be behaviour it’s learnt. “It’s a popular spot for spear fishermen and perhaps picking fish off the end of a spear is easy pickings, but it’s a con-

cern that it’s coming for people.” Adam says he retreated to the beach with his “tail between his legs” but was out again the next day, just not in the same spot. “My wife and mum won’t let me,” he joked. He believes the shark either just tried to bump him out of the way so he could get the speared kingfish or got a bit excited about it and actually came for him. “I’ll never know and I sleep better at night thinking it was the first one.” There have been reported deaths due to an attack from a bronze whaler, the latest in Auckland last year. Adam says he wanted to thank the kayaker who helped him and said it hadn’t been a good year, losing a wet suit in Kaiteriteri last weekend and a Cressi dive watch off the roof of his car. He’d be grateful if he could get either of those back.

Richmond protest against legal highs

Protests against the sale of legal highs were held in Nelson and Richmond on Saturday, with hundreds of signatures collected in an attempt to force the government and local councils to ban the synthetic drugs. Other protests were held around the country and all were highlightProtestors rally together to encourage people to sign a petition against legal highs. the petition is part of a nationwide effort to ban the drugs. “Every day here, we are reading the stories of the devastation and heartache that these products are causing. “We want to send the government a strong message and indicate to the local councils that we want them to ban the production, distribution and sale of these products in their communities.”

NEWS in brief FIRE AT FREEZING WORKS: A small fire broke out at the freezing works on Monday night. The fire started in a light fitting, which then dropped on to a conveyor belt. No serious damage was done, and the scene was attended by Richmond and Stoke Volunteer Fire Brigades, while an appliance from the Nelson Fire Service was also in attendance. POLICE ARREST 16 DRUNK DRIVERS: Sixteen people were caught drinkdriving over the weekend, some of them more than double the legal limit. Police say they are disappointed with the results of a “road policing” operation targeting drink-driving in both Nelson city and on rural roads. All of the drivers who were found over the legal drink-driving limit will face charges for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Wakefield to miss out on cycle trail gravy train

Businesses and community groups in Wakefield and Tapawera are launching a campaign to fight the Tasman District Council’s “shortsighted proposal” to cut spending on the Great Taste Tasman Trail. The council included a $600,000 cut to spending on the cycle trail in their draft annual plan which was released last month. That means construction of the next stage of the trail linking Wakefield and Tapawera will be delayed until council can secure further funding and information on maintenance costs. However, the proposal has been labelled “short-sighted” by Focus on Wakefield member Emma Marshall, who says the council have got it wrong. She says the completed section of the trail linking Nelson and Richmond to Kaiteriteri is incredibly popular and that success should send a clear message to council that they can’t af-

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. ford to stop now. “The trail is gaining so much momentum we need to keep going with it. If we stop we could be losing a wonderful opportunity to put Wakefield and beyond on the tourist map,” Emma says. Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust business development and marketing manager, Catharine Wood, says the numbers of riders support Emma’s argument, with counters at the Waimea Inlet recording 10,847 cyclists from December 2013 to February 2014.

The Mapua Ferry carried 16,117 cyclists last year. Although the section of the trail from Richmond to Wakefield has been completed, Wakefield Bakery owner Trish Sullivan says the benefits will not be fully realised in Wakefield until the full 175 kilometre loop through to Tapawera and Motueka is finished. Emma says council is promoting Pigeon Valley Road as a temporary link between Wakefield and Motueka but

that is not a viable option. “People don’t want to ride on the road and Pigeon Valley is used by logging trucks so it’s too dangerous. The trail needs to go through Spooner’s Tunnel as soon as possible - that will be a great attraction.” Wakefield Villa Tearooms owner Ally Preller says they are “big fans” of the trail, becoming official partners and raising $980 for the Trust through donations, and labels the council’s proposal “a crying shame.” Emma says Wakefield business and community groups will be making submissions to council objecting to the proposed cuts. She is also encouraging individuals to send in submissions which need to be made to council by 4.30 pm, Tuesday April 15. The 175 kilometre trail is now more than 60 per cent completed, with the remaining 67 kilometres estimated to cost $2.060 million.

Judene Edgar, deputy chair of the Primary Health Trust, says the Queen St building was a “better fit” for their needs than anything available in Nelson, and that was the reason for the move. “It’s a more centralized base for the population and it’s about being able to work together and strengthen that delivery for the community.” NMDHB chief executive, Chris Fleming believes there are many positives in the move. “This gives us an opportunity to create a community-facing

service that delivers benefits through co-locating whilst presenting opportunities to make savings,” Chris says. “We believe that this offers the best selection of functions to meet the PHS outcomes for a healthier population through improvement in Māori health, increased safeguards for the public’s health, and a reduced burden of acute and chronic disease.” Speaking with her Richmond councillor hat on, Judene says the move is fantastic for Richmond. “That’s 100 more people who are going to be working and hopefully spending money in Richmond.”

Village sculptures unveiled Waimea Village residents with, to right of scupture, Margaret Johnston, Kit Maling and Toni Lane at the unveiling of the sculpture at the village last Friday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. A sculpture unveiled at Waimea Village last week is far more than a special piece of art to be admired residents and visitors. The twin figures, sculpted in Oamaru stone by Nelson artist Margaret Johnston and commissioned by the Nelson Building Society, were unveiled in ceremony in the village grounds on Friday. Margaret told residents at unveiling

that “the theme for the sculpture was a new beginning and new hope” after the village changed ownership last year. The sculpture took around 80 hours to complete, although Margaret says the time flew by because she always had plenty of company. “Working down here has been a real pleasure because I enjoyed talking to all the residents.” NBS Richmond branch manager Toni

Lane told the residents at the unveiling that NBS was delighted to sponsor the project. NBS provided the loan for the purchase of the 172-dwelling village after the ownership was transferred to the residents last year. “It wasn’t really a difficult decision to support the village and we decided commissioning the sculpture was a way of cementing our relationship in stone,” Toni says.

Harvey World Travel Richmond 231 Queen Street Phone: (03) 544 6640 richmond@harveyworld.co.nz

Tim Dunnill and Nick Tilly, owners of Harvey World Travel Richmond, and employee Vicky McLean are delighted to announce that Rhonda Doole is joining them. Tim says that after three years he’s got to the point where they simply ‘have’ to take on more staff to keep up with demand. “The other day I was on the phone to a client, I had 3 clients waiting to see me, Vicky was busy with her own clients, and the phone was going mad with other people calling.” So finding another consultant with a similar outlook, sense of humour, a personal passion for travel along with an extensive work history in the travel industry to join the team has been a real bonus. In one way or another, Rhonda has worked in travel virtually her entire working life. Rhonda quickly and easily rattles off an impressively long list of places she’s been on in her travels, including a brand new hotel in Africa which turned out to be so new they hadn’t actually installed the glass in the windows. On that long list were Africa, Australia, various Pacific islands including Lord Howe and Norfolk islands, much of Europe and parts of the USA. Asked for her favourites, Rhonda quickly came up with Dubrovnik, the old city with its orange tiled roofs, the blues and greens of the

Adriatic Sea, and the sparkling white rocks of the coastline are special memories from a visit many years ago. Lucky Rhonda is heading back there for a revisit very soon; she’ll be sailing down the Croatian coast in a large catamaran with husband Phil and some close friends in May/June just a month after starting at Harvey World Travel Richmond. Tim says he’s calling Rhonda’s first four weeks in the office ‘play month’ – it will allow Rhonda the chance to get in to ‘play’ with the store’s systems and processes. The arrangement gives Rhonda the opportunity “to get to know how Vicky and I work”. When asked what makes her successful, Rhonda is quick to acknowledge that no-one can be an expert on everything: “I think my secret is knowing where to look for ‘solutions’ that best fit clients’ needs. I’m good at doing the research on products or destinations I’m not familiar with”. Tim says that this is precisely what he was looking for in a new employee; he puts a huge part of the business’s success down to taking the time to discover client needs, and then totally focussing on delivering to those needs. Rhonda starts at Harvey World Travel Richmond on 7 April before jetting away to Europe on 9 May for seven weeks. Contact Rhonda, at Rhonda.doole@harveyworld.co.nz Business Update. Adv.

Expo attracts 3000 The annual NelsonTasman Positive Ageing Expo just keeps getting bigger and better, with the sixth edition held at the Headingly Centre near Richmond last Thursday attracting around 3000 visitors and a record 68 stall holders. The expo was aimed at showcasing the recreational, health and social services available for senior citizens the Nelson-Tasman region. It included stall holders, seminars, activities and free health checks and CarFit checks and one of the organisers, Tasman District Council Mike Tasman-Jones, says that formula proved to be popular.

e l p o e p d o o f h s Y ou r f re Access staff member Jo Kara, right, with Shirley Dunlea at the Nelson-Tasman Positive Ageing Expo at the Headingly Centre last Thursday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. “It was easily the biggest one we have had. We had about 3000 people come through and the numbers were steady right through the day - there were still lots of people around at the end

when we were packing up. “I think the range of stalls had a lot to do with that. One person said it was like going to an older adults Disneyland there was so much to do and see.”

When there was competition, Air New Zealand doubled the number of flights and charged fares lower than Origin Pacific, to the point where Nelson became the third busiest domestic airport in the country. (It isn’t now). According to Air New Zealand’s own figures this must have meant running these aircraft at a crippling loss. Why would they do that? The purpose was obvious, because as soon as they had run Origin Pacific out of business, they cut the number of flights and doubled the fares and have now more than trebled them. Patrick Cronin.

Just to add to the depth of the variety of fares may I add my experience, this time on International Flights. Whilst I thoroughly agree with the high cost of flights from Nelson there is a similar story here. A few years ago we planned a trip to Canada. With a prominent public notice from Air NZ of impending rises in fares, we looked on Grab a Seat about 7 months ahead, expecting to get the best deal. There were few cheap seats so we thought we’d better take what was on offer. We paid around $2700 each, return to Vancouver. Then, just a matter of 6 weeks before we were due to travel, out came a special fare of $1700

return to Vancouver. There you are, we paid an extra $1000 penalty for paying early. Chris Clark.

Recently one of my family members had a an issue with them. He was on the way to the airport, got a flat tyre, fixed it, but arrived too late. He had to purchase another ticket at the cost of $400. He had insurance, but the claim was refused because, he should be allowing for breakdowns when travelling to the airport. He will never buy insurance for domestic flights again. Debbie Baxter. My wife and I have been treated most fairly by Air NZ with compassionate fares. Over Christmas we were in Wellington and due to return to Nelson on Monday 30 December. On Saturday 28 December I received notice that my brother had died in Christchurch and would have his funeral service Monday 30. Within 24 hours we were informed that my sister-in-law had died and her funeral service would be Tuesday 31. We asked if we could change our flights and the request was met with courtesy and much sympathy. We applied for bereavement fares and to our surprise and gratitude it was accepted. David Turner.

This Saturday a number of my staff will be taking part in the First Responders parade in Trafalgar St alongside our colleagues in a range of emergency services. I’m really proud of the work police do here in Nelson. At times it can be a pretty tough job, but I can honestly say the police men and women in this area are a dedicated, friendly and professional bunch. I hope plenty of you will take the opportunity to come along on Saturday and have a chat with them. There will be a range of staff available, including road police, community staff, dogs and our recruitment team. If you’re young, fit and keen for a challenging, but very rewarding, career you should definitely come and have a chat with the recruiters. The highway staff will have our flash new orange car on display and we’ll also have our speed laser set up if anyone wants to check how fast they can run. We know that the dogs are the most popular members of our team so two of them will be coming with their handlers. I would remind parents that the dogs are operational patrol dogs and everyone will need to keep a respectful distance unless the dog handler says otherwise. Myself and our district commander Richard Chambers will also be there, and we’re both always keen to hear our community’s views, so please feel free to stop for a yarn. See you on Saturday!

Twice a year our clocks are adjusted when daylight saving begins and ends. Whatever our views on this practice, it does seem to affect us for a while when it happens. One of these effects might be a realisation that time is not as unvarying as we might ordinarily think. People of faith know that God is outside time. The past is equally present to God as the future. The concept of being outside time is often referred to as eternity. Eternity with God and with our loved ones

Battlefield volunteer gets her medals Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz One of Nelson’s highest ranking returned servicemen Colonel Ken Fenton served alongside countless soldiers who received medals for bravery in World War II and the Vietnam War. But this week Ken has never been prouder as he watched his wife Joan receive two service medals in recognition of two years of voluntary work for the Red Cross during the Vietnam War. Joan was awarded the New Zealand General Service Medal and New Zealand Operational Service Medal at a ceremony at their Richmond home on Tuesday to recognise her voluntary work in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. Joan, who went to Vietnam with Ken when he was appointed as commander of the New Zealand V Force in 1968, worked as a Red Cross volunteer at a US field hospital in Saigon. She also helped out at orphanages in and around Saigon and often joined Ken when he visited New Zealand soldiers and medical teams based near enemy lines. “I spent every Wednesday morning as a Red Cross Volunteer, wearing my US Red Cross Volunteer uniform, at the Third US

Field Hospital near Tan San Nhut Airport,” Joan says. “Wounded and sick military personnel were brought in by helicopter and in an outdoor triage area their uniforms were cut off and they were showered. “I visited every ward in the hospital doing small personal messages for the patients and distributing writing materials, reading matter and cookies baked in America from a cart.” Joan says she was also busy looking after a steady stream of New Zealand military personnel “transiting through Saigon”. As a result their “small house virtually became a mess” which the US Army recognised by installing a 10 kilowatt generator on their section to provide power. Joan was also an unofficial ambassador for New Zealand after the ambassador’s wife left South Vietnam. She was an escort for Prime Minister Sir Keith Holyoake’s wife Norma when she visited South Vietnam in July 1970 and hosted a number of prominent US military staff. Although Saigon was relatively safe, Joan says it became increasingly stressful following the Tet Offensive as Viet Cong guerrillas launched terrorist-style attacks on the city. Viet Cong rockets fell “500 to 700 metres” from their house while a

They also had some sleepless nights as US planes bombed the approaches to Saigon causing “the foundations of our house to tremble and the shutters to rattle incessantly”. “One day, a party from the Vietnamese Police Training College turned up at our place with a box of armed hand grenades to help protect ourselves - they felt

that our street was not a safe area. But we always slept with a loaded shotgun, M16 or semi-automatic rifle alongside the bed which Ken considered enough protection without the grenades” Joan says “there was no doubt in my mind that I was in an operational area, at times wearing an Australian issue male jungle green uniform and exposed to a variety of risks”. “Today, I look back with some pride that I stuck it out for two years and made the best of difficult situations.” Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says they are very proud of Joan who becomes the only returned servicewoman among the 38 Vietnam veterans in the Nelson-Tasman region. Barry, who also served in Viet Nam, says he spent two weeks in Saigon guarding the New Zealand Embassy and appreciates the dangers Joan faced on a daily basis. “They were getting terrorist attacks in Saigon all the time. The Viet Cong were living there in the city - it wasn’t a safe place. “Joan also went out and visited a lot of field hospitals and when you do that you are in jungle greens. She put herself in a dangerous situation every time she did that.” Barry says it was a photograph of Joan at one of the field hospitals that led to Tuesday’s awards’ ceremony. “I was visiting Ken at home and I saw a photo of Joan, hanging on the wall, in her jungles greens at a field hospital in Viet Nam. I thought she deserved recognition for her work there so the RSA applied for the service medals. “The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Tim Keating, approved the application so now, 44 years after she was in Vietnam, she is getting recognition for her work.”

Celebrating 50 Years! Nelson Branch - Vintage Car Club NZ 1964 - 2014

Above: Jim and Kyra Wareing with their 1913 Vauxhall Princeton Tourer. Right: Dennis King, first chairman of Nelson Branch Vintage Car Club, driving in the 1964 inaugural Rally.

Family Day - 13 April A&P Showgrounds Richmond The Nelson Vintage Car Club will be celebrating 50 fabulous years with a Heritage Rally weekend beginning on Friday, April 11. Vintage Car Club members from all over New Zealand will be arriving with their cars to take part in the event and help celebrate this impressive milestone. Fifty-five will then go on tour from Richmond to Blenheim, St Arnaud, Murchison, Maruia, Reefton, Westport and finally to Greymouth, where they will meet with the South Island members for the national Easter Rally. The 50 year Heritage Rally is going to be well supported with 120 entries for the weekend and cars coming from the North Island and the lower part of the South Island. Of the 35 vintage car club branches throughout the country, 15 of them will be represented next weekend. Jim Wareing, Secretary of the Heritage Rally and Tour Committee, expressed the gratitude of the Nelson Vintage Car Club for the significant support from Nelson Building Society. “The Vintage Car Club are very grateful to their major sponsor NBS who

contribute tremendously to the club and have helped immensely with the successful planning of their 50 year Heritage Rally and Tour.” Jim said. While the Saturday will be a memorable day for the club members, Sunday is the perfect opportunity to come and see the beauty of these vintage cars up close and personal. The Nelson Vintage Car Club have taken over the A&P show grounds for the day and will be hosting a public open day, including a range of interesting displays and demonstrations like their Gymkhana events. Although they can’t say exactly what form the Gymkhana will take, John Hurley, a founding member of the Nelson Branch and enthusiastic contributor to the organizing committee, says that there will be three separate, timed activities performed on the grass strip in front of the main grandstand and are tricky little activities to test the driver, such as changing a tyre, backing into a shed, driving through a maze or having to put a letter in the mail box while driving past.

Celebrating 50 Years! Nelson Branch - Vintage Car Club NZ 1964 - 2014

has since ridden it to countless rallies around New Zealand. His brother Dennis King, who passed away several years ago, was the first Chairman of the Nelson Vintage Car Club. Lou McDowell will be bringing his 1911 Overland, Model 46, which is one of the most spectacular cars that the Nelson Vintage Car Club have. It took him four-and-a half years to fully restore the car which he bought from Warwick St in Richmond. Although it was pretty much complete, there were odd pieces that he needed to find and a lot of stuff had to be rebuilt, such as the wheels. Tyres had to be imported and a lot of brass work re-cast, but Lou managed to take the rusty bits that were originally his car and turn them into a masterpiece of motor vehicle history. As far as he knows it is the only one of its kind in New Zealand and, according to records, one of six still surviving in the world. Originally Nelson members belonged to the Canterbury branch but with so

much interest and 35 members in Nelson, it was decided to form a separate branch in 1964. The benefits of the Nelson Vintage Car Club are numerous for car enthusiasts. Companionship and friendships with monthly social gatherings. You also receive a monthly newsletter and bi – monthly magazines, discounted insurance through Vero, and meet people throughout New Zealand and join in the VCC Rallies at other branches. “We joined when we were going to retire and haven’t looked back,” says Jim and Kyra. “The friendship and things we have experienced have been incredible, we have had a ball and of course you get access to technical ability. If we want some help or technical assistance or access to parts, there’s plenty of help within the club or branch, it’s invaluable.” If you would like to know more about how to join the club please call Kevin Mercer, Chairman, on 541 8112 or visit our website www. nelsonvcc.org.nz

The Lantern Churches Who is the combine to walk Easter Bunny? A vicar’s random thoughts… with a cross

What’s on

On Good Friday, 18 April, Christians around the world will commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth almost 2000 years ago. Locally at 11 am the public are invited to participate in a short Richmond walk in which a wooden cross will be carried from outside the Wesley Centre, (opp TDC), to Holy Trinity Church grounds.

Sunday 13 April, 10.30am Sunday 27 April 10.30 am

A scripture reading, prayer and hymn will be presented at five points along the path. This walk will re-enact in some small way the journey of Jesus to his crucifixion, and recall the injustice and pain inflicted on an innocent man who dared to challenge the secular and religious authorities of his day in the name of God’s love for humanity.

Someone asked me what significance bunnies and eggs have for Easter. “Eggs are about new life aren’t they?” She guessed, “But I don’t get the bunny thing.”

A quick guide to all things Easter: Good Friday So called because of good that was achieved through Jesus’ agonising death on the cross. His death brought the forgiveness of sin and made a way for reconciliation with God the Father.

— Paul Tregurtha, Waimea Methodist Parish

Easter eggs are about new life They weren’t originally but now we see them as a nod to Jesus’ resurrection. Originally they were about spring and fertility.

Local men get together

Hot cross buns The cross represents the Roman tool of torture on which Jesus died on “Good Friday”. Hot cross buns used to be eaten only during the 7 weeks (called Lent) before Easter, not all year round.

The Men’s Group is usually held every month at various days and times. We aim to do a variety of activities - mostly involving food. We’ve enjoyed a hangi, wine and cheese with a talk, 10-pin bowling and a bbq around a bonfire. Conversation covers a wide variety of topics about life and faith. We are planning another wine and cheese evening and the idea of a fishing trip is also being discussed. All men are welcome.

Easter Sunday The day Jesus was resurrected. Angels rolled away this massive stone from his tomb so that when his followers went to visit, they found it empty, apart from the cloth wrapped around his previously dead body.

— Owen Haring, Assistant Priest

Many Christian festivals have some fun — but not particularly deep and meaningful — traditions that have been added over the years. Easter has too. Still it is the most important time of the year for Christians. Jesus’ life, death and resurrection are the key to our faith and relationship with God.

Easter Monday Celebrated mostly by those of the Eastern Orthodox or Roman Catholic faiths. But we all get a holiday!

All the churches in Richmond and Waimea celebrate in slightly different ways and have a variety of services. I reckon you’ll find something worth trying if you look around. At Church on the Hill we just have one service on Easter Sunday morning at 10 am (rather than the usual 9 am & 10.30 am). The bunny is about fertility — nothing to do with Jesus.

Did you know? Holy Trinity Church is the last church designed by prominent local architect, William Beatson, (1807– 1870). His son, Charlie, finished the plans after his father died.

Question:

“What is that ringing sound in my ears?” Answer: Ringing in your ears, or Tinnitus, affects most people at some time. It is a noise which is heard, but doesn’t come from an outside source. It can be described as a ringing, buzzing or hissing sound. It can be faint or loud, occasional or constant, steady or pulsing. It can range from not bothersome to very annoying. It is often noticed more at night or when you are somewhere very quiet. While there are no instant cures for Tinnitus, there are a number of effective options to help deal with it. We can help this process by changing and improving the sound going into your ears with hearing aids and sound therapy. If you are dealing with Tinnitus of any degree, come in and see one of our audiologists. We can then talk to you about what may be causing this to happen and work out the best treatment plan for you. If you would like to know more, simply phone us on 03 543 7153 and book a free initial appointment. We have solutions to suit all individual needs, lifestyles and budgets.

Adventure teams on form Students in the Top of the South are the most adventurous in the country, with Waimea and Garin colleges producing great results in the GO-4-12 Youth Adventure Race Hawkes Bay at the weekend. Waimea College won the girls race while Garin recorded thirds in the girls, boys and junior races at the official national secondary school adventure racing champs. Teams of four competed in the 12-hour race that featured mountainbiking, trekking, orienteering and team challenges, and it was Waimea's all-round ability that gave them an edge. Libby and Katie Malthus, Michelle Heslop and Ali Burrell were not only the fastest and fittest girls'

team at the champs, they were also the best team technically, displaying laser-accurate navigation and excellent team work. Garin College continued its good form at the champs with three thirds. The girls narrowly missed out on second finishing just 10 points behind second-placed New Plymouth Girls' High. The Waimea College boys finished sixth after making a good start. Fourty teams contested the championships. The weekend's race was the perfect test run for the teams’ main goal, the Hillary Challenge at the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre in Tongariro from May 1216.

Bill Coman made life member

Bill Coman became Waimea Old Boys’ latest life member on Saturday. He’s pictured second from right with his son Gordon, far left, and grandsons Tim and Ben. Photo: Andrew Board.

Bill Coman is Waimea Old Boys’ newest life member after accepting the honour on Saturday. It isn’t the first time Bill has been offered the honour, but the former coach, captain, vice president and club volunteer finally accepted shortly after his grandson Tim helped Waimea to a late victory over Stoke. Bill first starting playing for Waimea in the early 1950s and later played a substantial part in helping the club build a hall as its clubroom, along with various other sporting groups. Before that players got changed in a tin shed on Jubilee Park. His son Gordon also went on to play for the senior team and two of his grandsons, Ben and Tim, are members of the current senior side. Club patron Ken Smith says one of Bill’s most defining roles happened in 1958, when the club initially told

the rugby union that it wouldn’t field a senior team that year. “’No way’ said Bill. He gathered past and new players around him and fielded a team as its coach and captain. Bill will admit it wasn’t the greatest side, but included a bunch of very determined guys and went on to win the championship that year.” Bill served on the executive of the club from 1952-1960 and again from 1972-1979, the last four of those years as its vice-president. He also won the Jubilee Cup, which is awarded to the person to does the most work for the club, in 1951 and again in 1958. Ken, who was president during those years, said Bill was a great mentor for him. “He shaped me and directed me as he has done with so many others. He has a demeanour of immense quality and a way of putting his view across for a layman to understand.”

Kristian’s boot saves the day Co-coach Mark Milne says he would’ve bought Kristian Hall-Smith a beer on Saturday, but the youngster doesn’t drink. None the less, the former Garin College first-five deserved some reward after saving the day for Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys. Kristian, who started on the wing and moved into first-five for the final 20 minutes, secured an unlikely 36-35 victory for Waimea by whipping in a left foot conversion from the side-line right on full-time. “I would’ve [bought him a beer], if he drank,” Mark says. “He’s a young boy. He was at Garin College last year. They didn’t have a team so he had to go and play a little bit of B rugby at Marist but we’re happy to have him. He’s

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz got a hell of a lot of talent but he’s young and hasn’t played a lot of rugby yet.” Mark says Kristian, who has also played for the Waimea B team this season, was handed a spot on the wing to “give him more game time. We wanted to take the pressure off him.” But eventually Kristian was thrown in the deep end, and stepped up to the mark to seal the win. “He’s a great little player with some great skills, but to be honest I didn’t expect him to knock that kick over. It’s great for his confidence. He’s down at the Garin College field

every other day kicking goals so it just shows that sort of thing pays off.” Waimea Old Boys will host Wakatu Marist at Jubilee Park this Saturday, for the club’s second home game. Marist have lost games to Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers and Kahurangi, but did record a win over Galbraith Nelson in round two. Mark expects them to have a real crack, especially with former Waimea flanker Dan Hytongue on their roster. “He won’t be coming down here with his troops to lie down. We’ll have to be a million times better than we were on Saturday.” Both Ben Coman and Kaide Whiting, who missed Saturday’s match due to injury, are in doubt for this weekend’s match.

Proud supporters of Nelson Netball

It is hard to believe that another season is all but upon us. Clubs throughout Nelson have had numerous trials and by all accounts they have settled on their rosters for 2014. The college teams are yet to finalise their teams as they wait for summer sporting commitments to be completed. For anyone who wants to get on the court this season and is perhaps new to the area, or has been unable to trial, the first port of call should be the Nelson Netball Centre website www.nelsonnet ball.co.nz go to the club contact page to make your enquiry. The season tips off with the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament which is to be held at the Saxton Courts on Saturday and Sunday 12 - 13 April. The tournament is a great opportunity for coaches to try combinations and generally use the time on court to gel their team. Often it is the final “trial” for college teams if they have chosen to run a squad before naming their school’s elite team. This year the GH Tournament (as the tournament is fondly known, named so for Nelson Netball’s

Jacks OPD after winning the 2013 Nelson Premier Netball competition for the second year running. Patron Geraldine Hodgson) will be played over five grades. The A grade which is generally made up of Premier teams has only four entries – Jacks OPD, Prices Pharmacy A, Prices Pharmacy Black and Central Men (from Blenheim). With only three Nelson Premier teams competing it has been decided to play a round robin on Sunday only. The games will be of 4 x 10 minute quarters as opposed to the two twelve minute halves for the other

grades. The B grade will play in two pools of five and will play a round robin on Saturday, going into crossovers on Sunday. The C Grade will be run as B grade however there will be only four in each pool. The D and E Grades will also play a round robin on Saturday before combining for playoffs on Sunday. The first round will begin at 930am and play will continue through until 3pm.

WEDNESDAY 9 April 2014

Nelson Netball While the Saxton Stadium is unavailable for this year’s tournament, players, officials and supporters alike are conscious of the fact that the only play we had inside the stadium last season, was the GH Tournament, as only virtually minutes after the conclusion the flood occurred. There have been many changes in and around Nelson Netball during the “off season” as the Board prepared to put their strategic review in place. The key appointment of the process was the appointment of the Nelson Netball Centre Manager – Chelsea Routhan who took up her challenge at the end of January and has been firing on all cylinders since. Chelsea has an abundance of drive and enthusiasm and welcomes any contact from the netball public. Nelson Netball’s website is undergoing some changes and we look forward to a newer, more user friendly site in the very near future. So while it is in the ‘work in progress’ stage, please be patient, it will be well worth the wait. In a remit passed at the Annual General Meeting it was decided

that the Board would consist of four elected members and three appointed members. Elected members Jane Andrew, Carol Cook, Julie McGrath and Jenny Mills have been joined by Julie Baxendine, Steve Mitchell and Andy Vincent. The new chairman will be elected at the first new Board Meeting on 15 April. Nelson Netball is very excited to introduce the innovative new junior netball programme for boys and girls in Years 1 – 3. Last year, 14 netball centres throughout the country piloted changes to the junior netball programme with great success. The focus on the programme is exploring the game and the development of fundamental movement and ball skills. The new programme will replace the previous Fun Ferns and is schedules to run on Tuesdays from 3.45pm to 4.30pm at Saxton Stadium from 20 May. There is a $25 charge per person for the 11 week programme. Individuals do not need to be in a team as they will be put into teams each week. There will be a Future Fern Netball School Holiday Programme

31

2014 for Year 4 – 6 netballers which will be held at Saxton Stadium Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 April. The cost is $100 for the three days and players will receive a t-shirt and drink bottle. Registrations close Monday 14 April with Chelsea.

Saxton Boot Camp

($100 for 8 week course)

The future looks bright for local netball with strong numbers of school teams playing each week from the youngsters in the primary school grades right through to premier level.

Why Heyward Realty?

A real estate experience prompted me to become a real estate salesperson and join Heyward Realty. Lydia sold two of our houses and we felt that she was working for us, in our best interest – she was great at communicating and worked hard to get the result we wanted.

When we bought we had some queries, and even though it wasn’t with Lydia, she helped me through some of the complexities of the sale, so Heyward’s was a natural choice for me as I felt they had the same values as me – I felt like they cared… I’d like to be known as an agent who goes the extra mile for my vendors and buyers, gets the best result for them, keeps up the communication and makes it as stress free as possible.

Property insights Situations and events that can change the market value of your property Your agent will have completed a market appraisal of your property prior to listing. Retrospective sales information is analysed in this process, as well as details of other properties that are currently on the market and which may compare or compete with yours.

The market value of a property is never stagnant but is always changing and moving in response to a variety of external factors:
